You can also sell your clothes the easy way, with our consignment service. All you need to do is purchase a thrift bag, fill it up, and send it back with our free shipping label. From here, we process, photograph, list, and store these items and once these items sell, you’ll be paid into your provided account.
We created The Closet with one goal in mind: to reduce waste in the fashion industry.
Approximately 92 million tonnes of textile waste is created every year. That’s the equivalent of a truckload every second. Unfortunately, this figure is expected to increase by 60% between 2015 and 2030, so in less than six years we could be looking at around 148 tonnes of textile waste per annum. We’re also wearing clothes a lot less than we used to. The average consumer wears each garment 36% less than they did 15 years ago and throws away around 37kg each year.
We want to reduce these numbers by making it easier for Australian women to buy and sell preloved fashion. If we can reduce our consumption of new clothes and buy second-hand instead, it means fewer clothes being produced, and fewer clothes in landfill.
In this time-poor world, we understand the need for convenient and low-cost solutions. Buying and selling clothes on third party platforms and marketplaces is time-consuming and occasionally unsafe. The alternative are thrift stores, which do wonders for the community (we’re thrift store regulars ourselves), but it’s not a viable solution for everyone.
Our online platform allows you to shop second-hand like you would at any other online retailer. We offer free returns for most items (within a 30-day period), and we aim to dispatch orders within two business days of ordering. Our consignment service enables you to sell your clothes with minimal effort, as we take care of all the hard things for you.
The team at The Closet are passionate about making a difference. So far, we’ve listed more than 70,000 second-hand fashion pieces and recirculated more than 100,000kg of preloved apparel. We welcome you to join this fight against fashion waste by choosing to shop second-hand.
Louisa started The Closet in 2017, after watching the award-winning documentary, The True Cost, and realising for the first time what a devastating impact overconsumption of fashion has on our planet and its inhabitants.
She wanted to find a way that was easy for women to sell and buy second-hand clothes. Not long after this, The Closet opened its (metaphorical) doors.
Louisa believes that The Closet’s efforts to facilitate recycling, has inspired women to reconsider how and where they spend their money when it comes to fashion.
