Selling your clothes in a nutshell:

  1. Create your account online.
  2. Click to purchase a thrift bag or bags which we will dispatch to you without delay.
  3. When your bag/bags arrive, just fill it with the clothes and shoes that you want to sell and complete the Consignment Agreement.
  4. Drop your bags at your nearest Post Office.
  5. Sit back and relax whilst we go through your bag and list all suitable items on our website - it is that easy.

Below you will find info about how to sell your clothes with The Closet.

Selling your clothes at the markets or on social media is a drag. It's time-consuming, and it's often not worth the money for all the effort. THE CLOSET will sell your clothes for you without you lifting a finger once you have ordered a thrift bag and our courier has collected it from you. You will never have to deal with buyers, complaints and returns again. We'll do all the work - we'll photograph your clothes, sell them, and ship them to the buyer. With your earnings we can give you credit for you to shop or we can give you cash.

Currently we sell women's clothes, shoes and accessories such as hand bags and hats. We would love to sell your sunglasses, active wear, swimwear and sleepwear (both new with tags only) as well as maternity wear.

If you still have questions after reading our selling guide, please don't hesitate to contact us for more information. We aim to please!

Download and complete this consignment agreement form and return it with your clothes and items you wish to sell. Please ensure that you read all information carefully.

How do I send my near-new items to The Closet?

We would love to sell your clothes for you! Once you have created an online account, you can choose to simply send your clothes to us using your own bags or boxes, or you may purchase pre-addressed Thrift Bags from our website. You elect which size bag you require based on the number of items that you wish to sell. We will mail you a pre-addressed Thrift Bag or Bags which you use to pack your items in. You simply complete the consignment notice that will be in your Thrift Bag, include it with your items in your Thrift Bag and drop your bags at your nearest Post Office. Australia Post will safely deliver your thrift bags to The Closet.

Please ensure your clothing is freshly laundered and is not damaged in any way. There must be no missing buttons, broken zips, stains, tears, shrinkage, stretching, pilling, or obvious wear and tear. We accept only good quality items, they must meet our high standard so buyers can trust they'll be happy with the quality of what they're buying.

The cost of Thrift Bags are subsidised by The Closet but it will save us both money if youmake sure that you only fill it with suitable items. No point filling many bags with items that cannot be listed.

We will send you text letting you know once we have received your clothing along with an estimated date that your bag will be processed. Once we have processed your bag, we will send you an email detailing which items we have selected for listing and each item’s listing price. We will also confirm your preferred treatment of items that we have not selected for sale on our website.

What does The Closet do with my items once they have received them?

Our staff will process your clothing when we receive them. All your items will be inventoried. Items are carefully inspected and authenticated and then sorted based on whether they are suitable for sale or not. If they are selected for sale, we will categorise them, set a suitable price, press or iron clothing and photograph all items before listing them on our website as for sale. Items that are NOT selected as suitable for sale, will be dealt with according to the preference that you have indicated on the consignment notice.

How do I know how much my items are worth?

After a period of time, The Closet will have assembled a sizable database containing pricing details of previously sold items that may be similar to your consignment item. We do our best to research prices for specific or similar items in order to arrive at an estimate as to what items would cost if bought from a retailer that stocks the specific brand but we do not guarantee that this information is accurate or correct. Once we believe that we have collected sufficient data, we hope to launch a Pricing Guide which will assist you to reach a broad estimate of what price your item should sell for.

Before then, The Closet will determine a suitable listing price for your items at its sole discretion. Please note that your price expectation needs to take into account the costs that The Closet will incur in order to successfully sell your items at an affordable price. This include costs such as postage, processing (handling, pressing, photographing), marketing, packaging, and sending items to customers.

How much money will I get once my items have been sold?

Your payout is a percentage of The Closet's selling price. It increases with the selling price and is subject to change. The following table sets out the percentage of the selling price that you will be paid for individual items. Note that GST is deducted before calculating your payout. We recently increased payout percentages to compensate our sellers for the upfront cost of purchasing thrift bags. Payments are made weekly. You can indicate and amend your preferred method of being paid at any time.

When determining how much we will sell your item for, we need to consider, amongst others:

  • How much we think a customer will pay for the item
  • Condition of the item and whether it has its original price tags on
  • The price paid for the item new
  • Brand, seasonality, age of item, quality and style

For our share of the sale price, we take care of all the hassle and handle all aspects of the sale and the after-sales issues that may arise. You are guaranteed of a fixed payout once your item has sold without any of the costs and time spent selling your items yourself.

Remember, the more desirable, currently in-fashion, and suitable your clothes are, the more likely your items will sell and the more you will be paid. Self-assess each item critically, keep in mind how much you will realistically pay for such an item and the convenience of selling with The Closet. Would you buy this item for yourself or your best friend? Also consider that we aim to provide an amazing experience for buyers AND sellers. Hopefully, you will be both.

How will I get paid?

You can indicate and amend your preferred method of payment at any time. Payments are made monthly.

You may choose to either receive a store credit, which can accumulate until such time as you ask for a payout or use your store credit to purchase items from the website OR you may request a cash payment via PayPal.

We want our customers to be 100% satisfied with their purchases, every time they buy online from us. Quality control and authentication are therefore VERY important aspects of our business.

For this reason, we undertake a professional quality and design inspection as well as authentication of every item that we accept on consignment. Please ensure that you critically inspect the items that you intend sending to us as you will be required to pay return postage costs for items that we do not accept and that you want returned to you.

We will not accept ANY item that:

Shows signs of wear, is stained, dirty, has odours and that has rips, tears or pilling, items that are faded, have shrunk, or are blemished in any way. Items should not be altered or have stretched. We do not accept shoes that are dirty, scuffed and appear obviously worn. fading, shrinkage, or blemishes of any kind. Items need to have their sizing tags intact.

Clothing MUST be freshly laundered. Similarly, shoes and handbags must be cleaned.

We do not accept home-made items.

We have professionally trained staff that will inspect all brands, especially designer items and handbags to ensure that they are authentic. Please send any proof that you may have that branded items are authentic. Do not send fake branded items.

What type of items does The Closet prefer?

We prefer items that appear new or near-new, recent or current season’s styles, brands that are popular and authentic. Items that still have their price tags intact will attract a higher sale price.

We accept costume jewellery, sunglasses, scarves, belts, handbags, hats, caps, wallets and other popular fashion accessories.

We have very high standards for items sold on consignment in order to generate a large market place that people such as you can trust to buy good quality, fashionable and affordable clothing and accessories from. For example, you may find that we accept only half of the items that you send, but this careful vetting of each and every item means that when you choose to buy from us, you, as well as all our other customers, will be 100% thrilled with your purchases.

What type of items do The Closet NOT accept?

Do not send items that are non-clothing or fashion items such as toys, phone cases, home wear, books, etc.

We do not accept items that are undesirable, fake brands, themed clothing or clothing displaying inappropriate or offensive messages, words or images, outdated and old-fashioned items (with the exception of some high-quality vintage clothing).

We do not accept any form of underwear, slippers, hair accessories, work uniforms or costumes (except for children’s costumes, wedding dresses or bridesmaid dresses). We accept  new with tags sleepwearn and beach wear provided they have never been worn.

We do not accept fake or counterfeit items, items obtained illegally or ‘niche items’ that will only appeal to a very limited audience.

Currently we sell women’s clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories.

What happens to items that The Closet do not accept?

When sending your items that you wish us to consider selling, you can indicate whether you want the items that are NOT selected for sale:

  • Returned (in which case you will have to bear the shipping costs)
  • Donated to a charity (charity to be selected by The Closet, this will vary from time to time)
  • Dealt with as we see fit (but not sold on our website) in which instance items become the property of The Closet. We may select some of these items for sale by weight to strictly approved parties that may recycle, upcycle or dispose of items. Very little money is recouped in this instance and it is intended that any money received is applied to cover our costs such as postage and handling of these items.

Can I change my mind and ask for my accepted items back?

No, this is NOT possible.

What happens with my clothes that do not sell?

If your clothes do not sell within a reasonable period of listing, The Closet, at its discretion, may decide to reduce the listing price by up to 50%. If the item remains unsold for more than 9 weeks, The Closet may remove the online listing.

After this time, you  it will be posted back to you at your cost or we will donate it to one of the charities supported by The Closet, depending on the option that you ticked on your Consignmemt Agreement. If the item is still within The Closet’ possession for a further one month because you have not indicated your preference, your item becomes our property to do with as we wish.

What happens if I do not agree with the listing price that The Closet used for an item?

Once you have sent us your items, you effectively grant The Closet the right to make all decisions, in our sole discretion as to whether we accept items for sale or not, how much we decide to list items for and whether we remove items from our website or not. If you are unhappy with a listing price, we would like to hear from you and will value your views. So please make sure to contact us within 48 hours of your item being listed as for sale on our website if you don’t agree with our pricing. Generally, we do not adjust listing prices though. Remember, we price items to encourage sales.

The Closet would like to retain you as a seller and buyer and will do our very best to award you a fair amount for your great quality clothes.
